An Afternoon in Little Netherlands

It is fun to see a place in its liveliest hour, but it could also be pleasant to get to know a place when it is at its sleepiest. Last week, we wandered around the old town area of Semarang at one of its sleepiest hours: after lunch on a Sunday. Under the scorching afternoon sun, we walked around the colonial buildings and back alleys with only a handful of other people in sight. We could see why the area is nicknamed the Little Netherlands,  but the murals we stumbled into brought some modern-day flavors into the old town.

There are times when pictures speak more than a thousand words, and this is definitely one of them. Here are some pictures from our afternoon strolling around Semarang’s old town area, which also kick off a new category in our blog: Photo Essays. Enjoy!
